The Brief
Building the website for a fictional small business named Portland Historical Tours was my first website project for school. Portland Historical Tours is a business that features three different tours for various aspects of Portland’s history. I have redesigned the site ever since, with the main goals of: (1) changing the design, (2) making it more user friendly, and (3) cleaning up the code. The revised site is what is featured here.

Challenges
One of the challenges with designing the website was figuring out how to design it with the site goals better in mind. The old site failed to do that, and it was also not responsive when it came to smaller devices. Along with that, the code was also a bit sloppy. So I decided that a complete overhaul of the site was necessary. This time, I wanted to focus more on user experience and interaction.

Lessons
Building this website helped me to design with the user in mind. I strongly believe a user should spend as little time as they need in a website and be on their way with the information they needed. Keeping the design simple does not compromise how it looks aesthetically, in fact it compliments it because it helps me as a designer, to make sure that whatever features I put in the site are there because it is necessary not just because I think it is cool.
